Wood or Iron for a San Antonio Fence, Priced by Climate

Wood or iron for a San Antonio fence, compared on twenty year cost rather than sticker price, with the climate and soil that drive both.

Ask what a fence costs in San Antonio and you get two numbers and a shrug: wood is cheaper now, iron lasts longer.

Both are true, and neither one tells you what this ground charges you. San Antonio keeps a decay record and a soil record, and both are working on your posts long before the fence looks old. Count those two over twenty years and the cheaper bid stops being the cheaper fence.

Wood Bids Lower Than Iron on Every Texas Quote

Pine and cedar cost less to buy and less to set, so the first bid always favors wood. Installed Texas prices land at about $18 to $30 per foot for a 6-foot pressure-treated pine privacy fence and $45 to $90 for ornamental steel or wrought iron, on published cost ranges trued up to Texas quotes (HomeGuide and Angi, 2026). That gap is real. Nothing later in this piece makes it disappear on install day.

Material (6 ft residential) Installed cost per foot in Texas What moves it inside the range
Pressure-treated pine privacy $18 to $30 Picket grade, post spacing, gate count
Cedar privacy $25 to $45 Western red cedar and clear, knot-free grades price at the top
Ornamental steel or wrought iron $45 to $90 Panel style, picket spacing, custom welded work

Those ranges cover flat, clear ground. They leave out old-fence removal and haul-off, gates and operators, and the rocky or heavy clay that slows a post hole, all of which are common on a San Antonio lot.

Learn These Four Terms Before You Read Either Quote

Four words decide most of what happens to a fence here, and two bids can use all four differently. The wood-preservation industry’s own standard, AWPA U1, puts fence posts in Use Category UC4A, the general ground-contact class, with a preservative retention set for long in-ground service (American Wood Protection Association, current edition). A quote that never names that class is quoting you a picket price and calling it a fence.

Term What it means Why it matters in San Antonio
Heartwood The dead inner wood of the tree Decay resistance sits in cedar heartwood; cedar sapwood does not carry it
Ground contact (UC4A) The treatment class for wood buried in soil The part of a wood fence that fails first is the part below grade
Embedment How deep the post sits below grade in concrete Shallow caliche can stop an auger before it reaches spec depth
E-coat The epoxy layer under an ornamental steel topcoat The corrosion warranty on iron is written against this coating

San Antonio Sits at 52.2 on the Wood Decay Index

The USDA’s decay hazard index scores San Antonio at 52.2 against Dallas at 44.3, both inside the moderate band that runs 35 to 65 (USDA Forest Products Laboratory, 2009). Houston sits at 77.2 in the high band. So a San Antonio wood post is not living the Gulf Coast’s life, and it is not living Dallas’s either. It sits about eight points of hazard worse than the Metroplex, every year, for the whole life of the fence.

Which wood you buy changes what that index does to you. A worldwide durability checklist rates western redcedar and coast redwood as resistant, class 2, and loblolly southern pine as only moderately resistant to nonresistant, class 3 to 4 (Scheffer and Morrell, 1998). That rating applies to heartwood. A cedar board cut from sapwood is not a decay-resistant board, whatever the invoice calls it, which is why the grade on a bid matters more here than the species name.

Iron has no stake in any of this. There is nothing in a steel picket for a fungus to eat.

San Antonio Soil Moves Posts That Never Rotted

The second force works on the post from the side. The NRCS classifies Houston Black, the Texas State Soil, as a smectite-clay Vertisol at roughly 60% to 80% clay, with very high shrink-swell, and it runs the Blackland Prairie from Dallas south to San Antonio (USDA NRCS, 2023). That soil swells when it rains and pulls back when it dries. A post set in it gets pushed and released, season after season, whether or not the wood is sound.

Then there is the rock. In the Lacoste series, depth to the cemented caliche horizon runs 10 to 20 inches, a spread commonly found within 25 horizontal feet, and the Gruene series puts strongly cemented caliche around 13 to 22 inches down (USDA NRCS, official series descriptions). One fence line can cross both conditions.

Three things follow from that, and they apply to wood and iron alike:

  • Post depth is a site decision, not a price decision. Where caliche stops the auger short, somebody has to break through it or the post is under-embedded from day one.
  • The corner and gate posts move first. They carry the most load and get the least help from neighbors on both sides.
  • A seasonal tilt is the ground talking, not the wood failing. A post that leans a little more each summer was set too shallow for what this clay does.

Iron Was Already Priced Against Both of Those Forces

Ornamental steel answers decay and movement in its spec sheet. Ameristar warrants its Montage welded ornamental steel against corrosion, cracking, peeling, chipping, and blistering for a lifetime on the residential grade and 20 years on the commercial grade, backed by a multi-stage pretreatment plus an epoxy e-coat and topcoat (Ameristar, current warranty). Set that against the certified home-inspector trade’s own reference chart, which rates a wood fence at about 20 years (InterNACHI, n.d.). One material is warranted past the point where the other is scheduled to be replaced.

Iron still has to be set correctly in this clay. Steel does not stop a Vertisol from swelling, and a shallow iron post leans the same way a shallow wood one does. What changes is the failure list. With wood you are managing rot at the ground line and movement below it. With iron you are managing movement only.

A Woodlands homeowner, Rita S., put the price side of that plainly in a review of a metal fence we built for her, in a different metro from this one: “They charged almost $900.00 less than three other companies for the same metal, coating and paint for my black metal fence in Del Webb of The Woodlands…Thanks Matthew.”

Price the Fence Across 20 Years Before You Sign Either Bid

At year 20 the two materials are in different places, and that is where the bid gap closes. Wood arrives at the end of the service life its own trade reference gives it. Ornamental steel arrives inside the term of the coating warranty it was sold under.

Material Where it stands at year 20 What that means for the bill
Pressure-treated pine privacy At the roughly 20-year mark the home-inspection trade rates for a wood fence You are pricing a second fence
Cedar privacy Heartwood boards often standing; sapwood boards and post bases gone first A partial line, then a second full spend
Ornamental steel or wrought iron Inside the lifetime residential term of the Montage coating warranty Priced once

Run that against the per-foot table. A 200-foot pine fence at $24 a foot is $4,800, and a second one twenty years later makes it two purchases. The same 200 feet of ornamental steel at $60 a foot is $12,000 and is still under warranty when the wood run is being torn out. On this ground, the higher first number was already the twenty-year number.

Wood Still Wins the Back Yard Where Privacy Is the Job

Iron cannot screen a yard, and that settles a large share of San Antonio jobs before cost enters the conversation. A picket fence you can see through does not hide a pool, a patio, or a neighbor’s second story. So the honest comparison is not material against material across the whole property. It is material against material line by line.

If the San Antonio job is Choose Why
A back yard where privacy is the point Cedar, or cedar boards on treated pine posts Ornamental iron gives no screen at any price
A front yard under the city’s open-fence rule Ornamental steel or wrought iron San Antonio caps a solid front-yard fence at 3 feet and an open one at 4
A long exposed run on shifting clay Ornamental steel or wrought iron Nothing in a steel panel rots through the wet-then-dry cycle
A perimeter that must be finished this year Wood, with the picket grade named in writing Wood covers more feet per dollar; the named grade protects the spec

Where wood is the right call, the price you pay for it is a buying decision. We are Master Halco’s largest-volume customer, holding their 2026 Largest Volume Customer awards for the Southwest Region and the World, and that picket cost goes into the quote instead of into the margin. That is how a properly specified cedar or treated-pine fence stays competitive with a cheaper bid built on a thinner board.

How San Antonio Fence Builders Compare on Reach and Materials

A buyer weighing wood against iron here has to find a builder who installs both well, and the field clusters into a handful of companies that do. Every San Antonio company below installs both wood and ornamental iron; here is how they compare on metro reach, materials, and what each one is built around.

Company Texas metros served Wood and iron both installed What the row is built around
Johnson Services Company Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio Wood, ornamental iron and aluminum, plus brick and stone Over 100 crews statewide, 5 to 15 of them in San Antonio
Quality Fence & Welding San Antonio and South Texas Iron, aluminum, chain link, wood A 29,000 square foot in-house steel fabrication shop
Fence Pros of Texas San Antonio metro Wood, iron, vinyl, chain link, aluminum Railing work alongside fencing and gates
Alamo Fence Company of San Antonio San Antonio metro Chain link, iron, wood, ranch A fence supply store alongside installation

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a wood or iron fence cheaper in San Antonio?

Wood is cheaper to install and iron is cheaper to own past about year 20. The gap on install day runs from roughly $18 to $30 a foot for treated pine against $45 to $90 for ornamental steel, and it narrows to nothing once the wood run reaches replacement.

How long does a wood fence last in San Antonio?

Plan on about 20 years for a well-built wood fence here, with the post base at the ground line deciding most of it. San Antonio’s decay hazard sits above Dallas and below Houston, so the same fence built in the Metroplex generally buys you a little more time.

Does an iron fence rust in San Antonio?

A powder-coated ornamental steel fence resists it, because the coating system, not the steel, is doing the work. Ameristar warrants its residential Montage line against corrosion, cracking, peeling, and blistering for a lifetime, which is why the e-coat spec belongs on the quote.

Will clay soil push a new fence post out of line?

It can, and it does not need the wood to be rotten to do it. San Antonio’s Blackland Prairie clay swells wet and shrinks dry, so embedment depth and concrete footing size are what keep the line straight, on iron posts as much as wood ones.

Can you build a privacy fence out of iron?

Not on its own. Ornamental iron is an open picket product, so a property that needs a visual screen either goes with wood, or pairs iron on the front and side elevations with a solid material behind the house.

How tall can a fence be in San Antonio?

The city caps a solid front-yard fence at 3 feet and a predominantly open one at 4 feet, with 8 feet as the maximum residential height overall. A permit is required for a new fence inside city limits, with limited exemptions, so confirm both before anyone quotes a height.

Is cedar worth the extra cost over pine here?

It is when the boards are heartwood and the posts are treated for ground contact. Cedar rates as decay-resistant and southern pine does not, but that rating applies only to heartwood, so cedar cut from sapwood costs more without buying the durability you paid for.

The Cheaper Bid and the Cheaper Fence Are Two Different Numbers

Wood is cheaper now. Iron lasts longer. Both of those still hold, and now you know what each one is worth on this specific ground: a decay index of 52.2 that never stops running, and a clay that moves posts the rot has not even reached yet. Price wood where it screens a yard and buy the grade in writing. Price iron where the run is long, open, and meant to outlive you.

What decides which of those two you end up with is whether the person quoting the job measured your ground before naming a number.

How Johnson Services Company Prices San Antonio Wood and Iron From Measured Footage

Both halves of that twenty-year math depend on a quote written against your actual line, so we measure every job on site before we specify anything, and we load the materials and the crew before anyone leaves the yard. Homeowners rate us 4.9 stars across 60 Google reviews, and 4.9 stars across 170 reviews on SoTellUs. In a June 2026 SoTellUs review, a customer wrote: “Johnson Services provided a great estimate to replace our backyard fence beating out all other quotes. They were quick to replace and remove the old fence. The fence looks great and well built.”

The two things customers name most in those reviews are the price and the walkthrough before the crew starts. In an April 2026 SoTellUs review, a customer wrote: “The price was fair, the service was excellent, and everything was left clean once the job was done. Communication was great throughout the process, and they really took the time to go over the design with me before starting the work.”

Behind that: over 100 crews statewide with 5 to 15 working the San Antonio metro out of our office on Naco Pass, more than 2 million feet of fence across 20,000-plus projects last year, an A+ BBB rating held since 2003, and zero craftsmanship warranty callbacks across those 20,000-plus jobs. Our one-year craftsmanship warranty exists, and the record says it does not get used.
