Who buys this fence, and why
You have room on the inside of the drive for the leaf to swing, and you want the entrance the house deserves. A dual leaf reads formal between two columns and opens wide for a trailer. A single leaf suits a narrower drive and costs one operator rather than two. Iron pickets keep the house visible from the street; a cedar face closes the view. Owners replacing a sagging wood gate come to this build, because a steel frame under the face is what stops the sag.
What your money buys
A welded steel frame, faced in iron pickets or cedar, hung on heavy hinges off a post set deep in concrete for the leaf weight. One operator per leaf, listed to UL 325, with photo eyes and a contact edge so the gate reverses on anything in its path, safety loops in the drive, and a manual release for a power outage. Posts, operator and hardware sized to the leaf, never to the price.
What to settle before the crew arrives
Settle the width first, because a boat or an RV needs eighteen feet and a car needs twelve. Decide iron or cedar on the face, arched or flat on the top, and whether the leaf swings in or out, which the slope of your drive usually decides for you. Tell us how you want to open it, from the car, the house or your phone, and whether a keypad or an intercom goes on the post.
What it asks of you once it is up
An iron gate in powder coat wants a rinse and a look at the hinges once a year. A cedar face wants a stain every two or three years like the fence beside it. Lubricate the operator's moving parts twice a year and keep the drive clear of debris around the leaf. Test the manual release once so you know where it is. Most automatic gates give you ten to fifteen years of service.
