Board and batten goes up one board at a time and steps with the ground, where a panel fence leaves a triangle of daylight under every section. The batten over each joint keeps the run private through the first summer, when a plain privacy fence opens hairline gaps along its whole length.
What your money buys
Six-inch boards set with a small gap and a batten over every gap, on the same posts, rails and gates as a standard privacy fence. The batten side is the finished face, and the pattern reads as vertical stripes from the street. A batten takes less wood than the second layer of a board-on-board run, so the number sits between plain privacy and board-on-board. A cap rail and trim finish the top.
What to settle before the crew arrives
Decide which way the finished face points before the crew arrives, because a shared line usually wants the battens on the neighbor's side or on both. Pick the height, six or eight feet, and say where the gates go. Tell us if the ground falls more than a foot across the run, so the salesperson can plan how the top line follows it.
What it asks of you once it is up
Treat it like any cedar or pine fence. Stain every two to three years, wash it once a year, and keep the sprinklers off the boards. The battens take the sun first and show it first, so a run that looks tired usually wants a stain and nothing more.
