What your money buys
Posts carry two or three horizontal rails with open space between them, and there are no pickets. A rail fence covers long distances for less wood than a solid fence. A truck can see over it at every point, which matters on a drive that meets a road at an angle. The gates fit equipment, not people. Corner and gate posts go deeper than the line posts, because they carry the pull of the whole fence.
What to settle before the crew arrives
Pick two rail or three rail before we price the fence. Three rails hold livestock better and take more wood. Tell us where the drive gate goes and how wide it has to be, because a trailer needs a wider opening than a pickup. Walk the line with us if the ground rolls, since a rail fence follows grade differently than a panel does. Tell us if livestock are on the property now, since that changes both the rail spacing and the post depth.
What it asks of you once it is up
Rails weather faster than pickets because every face takes sun and rain. Seal or stain every two to three years. Walk the line once a season and tighten the hardware where a horse or a gust has worked it loose. Keep brush cut back off the rails so the wood dries after weather. Check the gate posts after a wet winter, because saturated ground moves a heavy gate before it moves a fence.
