Who buys this fence, and why
You need a working perimeter that keeps a dog in and a number that stays sensible. Galvanized chain link is the plain, honest option for a side yard, a back lot line, or the run behind a shop. It suits owners who want the yard secure without paying for a view they will not see. It also suits a big lot where a wood fence would cost more than the ground is worth. It is also the honest answer for a long back line that nobody is ever going to stand and look at.
What your money buys
Zinc coated steel fabric hangs on steel posts with a top rail. You get an open fence you can see through, usually in four, five or six foot heights. Gates are frame and fabric, in walk or drive widths. Terminal and corner posts are heavier than the line posts, because they carry the tension of the whole fence. Line posts, terminal posts and rails all come in different weights, and a quote should name which ones you are getting.
What to settle before the crew arrives
Pick the height and the gauge. A heavier gauge wire stands up better to a big dog and to a trailer backing near the line. Tell us if you want a bottom tension wire, which holds the fabric down where an animal digs. Decide the gate widths, since a drive gate for a mower and one for a truck are different jobs. Tell us if a gate has to clear a slope, because a swing gate on a rise needs the hinge side planned.
What it asks of you once it is up
Galvanized fence asks for almost nothing. Wash it if you want to. Walk the line once a year and check the tension bands and the gate hinges. Keep a heavy vine off the fabric, because a mature vine will pull a chain link line out of plumb faster than weather will. Chain link keeps working as it ages, which is why so many of them stand long past the day they stopped looking new.
