Who buys this fence, and why
Your drive climbs from the street, or a car has to sit right up to the gate, or there is simply no room on either side for a leaf to swing. A slide gate solves all three. It suits a wide opening, because one leaf covers the whole drive without the two operators a dual swing needs, and it suits a lot where the gate sits close to the house. It is also the gate for an owner who never wants a leaf sweeping across the cars.
What your money buys
A welded steel frame, iron pickets or a cedar face, rolling on a cantilever truss that never touches the drive, or on a ground track where the grade allows. One operator listed to UL 325 with photo eyes, a contact edge and safety loops, a heavy post set deep in concrete at the receiving end, and a manual release. The counterbalance section runs back along the fence, so the run beside the drive needs that much clear length.
What to settle before the crew arrives
Settle the opening width and the clear length along the fence for the leaf to park in, because a cantilever gate needs about half its width again beside it. Decide the face, iron or cedar, and whether the track goes in the ground, which the drive surface and the slope decide. Tell us where the keypad post goes so a driver reaches it from the window.
What it asks of you once it is up
Keep the roller and the truss clear of leaves and mulch, and rinse the powder coat once a year. A ground track wants sweeping after a storm. Lubricate the operator's moving parts twice a year and test the manual release once. A slide gate has fewer things to sag and nothing to swing into a car, which is why it lasts.
