A driveway gate is the fence's front door, and it is bought for three reasons at once: the street stays on its side of the line, the car gets in without anyone getting out, and the house looks like somebody chose its entrance. It is also the one part of the fence that moves, which is why the gate that sagged and the operator that quit are the two jobs a fence company hears about most.

What a new driveway gate costs in Texas

Which driveway gate you should actually buy
Swing gate
Pick it where the drive has room on the inside for the leaf to swing and the house wants the classic entrance. Single or dual leaf, fewer moving parts than any other gate, one operator per leaf. It is the gate most Texas drives get.
Slide gate
Pick it where the drive climbs from the street, where a car has to sit right up to the gate, or where there is no room to swing. One leaf rolls along the fence on a cantilever frame or a track and covers an opening as wide as the drive needs, on one operator.
Access control, on either one
A keypad on the post, telephone entry that rings your phone, remotes in the car, an app, an exit loop so the gate opens on the way out and a safety loop so it never closes on a car. Most owners take a keypad and remotes on the day and add the intercom later.

A fence is three things: what holds it up, what carries the load between the posts, and what you see from the street. You choose the last one. We build the first two the same way on every job, which is how twenty thousand fences last year produced not one callback.
Posts set below where Texas clay moves
The crew digs to depth for the height you picked, wet sets the posts in concrete and leaves them to cure. Texas clay moves through a dry summer and a wet spring, and a post set shallow is why a fence leans three years later. Ours do not.
A frame we never lighten to win a quote
Rails carry your fence between the posts. You never see them, and they decide whether the line stays straight. A cheap bid saves its money here first. We do not build a frame lighter than the job needs to make a number look better.
Hardware that never bleeds rust down your new fence
Fasteners, hinges and latches match the material, so nothing streaks. Your gate hardware carries the most weight and the most use, so its size follows the leaf rather than the price.
How your driveway gate will actually look
A driveway gate is the first thing the street sees of your property, so it is worth a minute on how it should look. Every one of these is a choice you make in the drive with the salesperson, and most of them change the quote a little.
Iron or cedar on the face
Iron pickets keep the house in view and read formal between columns. A cedar face on a steel frame closes the view and matches the fence beside it. Both hang on the same frame, so the choice is the look.
Arched or flat on top
An arch reads traditional and suits a brick house and a pair of columns. A flat top reads quieter and suits a newer elevation or a horizontal fence.
Columns or posts
A limestone or brick column at each side carries a lantern and the house number and hides the operator post. Steel posts cost less and disappear behind the leaf.
Where the keypad goes
On a pedestal at the driver's window, far enough back from the gate that the leaf never swings into a waiting car. The conduit goes in with the posts, so there is no trench to dig later.
The finish
Black powder coat is the usual pick and disappears against planting; bronze warms up against tan brick and limestone. The color goes on at the factory, and there is no repainting.
A slope, a long opening or no power at the gate is a normal gate job
A drive that climbs from the street gets a slide gate, so nothing scrapes the grade. An opening wide enough for a trailer gets a dual leaf or one long cantilever. A gate with no power nearby gets a solar panel and a battery, and every gate gets a manual release for the day the power goes out. A live oak over the drive keeps its roots, and the posts go either side of them. None of that counts as a custom job on our quote.

Common questions about a new driveway gate
Does the gate still open when the power goes out?
Yes. Every operator we hang has a manual release, and we show you where it is on the day. A battery backup keeps the gate cycling through an outage, and a solar panel powers a gate with no power nearby at all.
Can I open it from my phone?
Yes. A remote lives in the car, a keypad lives on the post, and an app on your phone does what the remote does from anywhere. Telephone entry rings you when someone presses the button and lets you buzz them in.
What does UL 325 mean for my family?
It is the safety standard every automatic gate operator we install carries a listing to. Every entrapment zone gets two independent protections in each direction of travel, photo eyes and a contact edge, on monitored sensors, so the gate reverses on anything in its path and stops rather than closing blind when a sensor fails.
Do I need a permit or HOA approval for a driveway gate?
Often one or the other. An association that regulates gates asks for a driveway gate set back at least ten feet from the right of way where the drive meets a laned road, and some cities want a permit for the electrical work. We check both before a post goes in the ground.
How long does a gate install take?
A day for the posts and the columns, and a day for the gate, the operator and the wiring, with the concrete curing between them. The salesperson gives you the day count before you sign anything.
