Buying a Fence

How Austin Fence Companies Compare on Warranty, Reviews, and Schedule

Austin fence companies all clear four stars. What actually separates them is the warranty, the review dates, the crew count and the picket grade.

Search for a fence company in the Austin metro and the same short list comes back, each name with a star rating beside it. That rating tells you how a company finished its last job. It cannot tell you whether a crew shows up on the day it promised, or what happens if a post moves in year two.

Four things separate one contractor here from another, and you can check all four before you sign. Below is where each named local company stands on what it publishes, and how to make any of them answer the rest.

No One Fence Company Owns the Austin Metro Outright

No single company wins this market on the rating alone. Austin metro contractors cluster between 4.2 and 5.0 stars, and the star average mostly works as a first cut, because 68% of consumers say they will not use a business rated below 4 stars (BrightLocal, 2026). Once a shortlist clears that bar, the rating stops sorting it. Four other things do the sorting: warranty coverage, review volume and recency, crew depth, and where the wood is bought.

Which of the four matters most depends on the job sitting in your yard.

Your situation Weight this first Why it decides the job
Fence has to be done by a closing or an event Crew depth in the Austin metro A date only holds if someone can cover a missed day
Replacing a 20-year-old wood fence on an established lot Warranty wording Old post holes, roots, and removal are where install errors show
Two bids hundreds of dollars apart Picket grade and where the wood is bought The same word on two quotes can mean two different boards
You have never heard of the contractor Review volume and recency Volume is what lets you read the bad reviews, not just the good

Ask What the Warranty Covers Before You Ask How Long It Runs

Most fence warranties cover the workmanship or the material, and almost never both. Texas has no statewide license for fence contractors (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, 2026), so the written warranty is the only promise you can hold a company to once the crew drives off. A long term on a vague page is worth less than a short term that names what it fixes.

Five things a warranty should say in plain words before you sign it:

  • What it covers. Craftsmanship means the install: posts, setting, spacing, gate hardware, and how the boards were hung. Material means the wood or the metal itself, and that is usually the mill’s warranty.
  • When the term starts. The day of final walkthrough, or the day of the deposit. Ask.
  • What voids it. Staining, adding to the fence, or a neighbor tying into it.
  • Who honors it. The company, or a subcontractor you have never met.
  • How often it gets used. A callback record is the only honest test of a warranty page.

Ours runs one year and covers craftsmanship. Materials are handled by spec instead: pressure-treated pine framing rated for ground contact, cedar pickets. Across more than 20,000 projects last year we had zero craftsmanship warranty callbacks. That is the record we have; we write it as history and never as a guarantee about your job.

Volume and Recency Tell You More Than the Star Average

A star average compresses a company’s whole history into one number, so read what sits under it. The average shopper checks six different review sites before deciding (BrightLocal, 2026), and the reason is that one aggregate rarely tells the whole story. Volume is what buys you the failure modes. A record with hundreds of reviews carries enough one-star and three-star entries to show you what goes wrong and whether anyone answered.

Recency matters just as much. Crews turn over, salespeople leave, and a company that was excellent in 2023 is being run by different people today. Read the last 90 days before you read the average.

Then read for your job. Reviews that name gate work, staining, or small repairs describe a company doing that work well. If you are replacing a whole fence line on an established lot, look for reviewers who describe a full tear-out, a haul-off, and a finished line.

Crew Depth Is What Holds Your Install Date

Ask how many crews a company runs in this metro, because that number predicts whether your date survives a sick day or a wet week. Specialty trade contractors average fewer than ten workers per establishment across about 599,000 U.S. businesses (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025), so most fence companies here run one to three crews. When a one-crew shop loses a day, every job behind you moves too.

We run over 100 crews across Texas, with local crews working the Austin metro out of our Round Rock office. Crew depth is only useful where you are actually buying, so the question to ask any contractor is how many crews work your side of the metro, and who picks up the job if the assigned crew is out.

In a June 2026 review on SoTellUs, a customer wrote: “In addition the crew showed up promptly per schedule and Matt came by early to coordinate some changes I requested after accepting the original quote. The fence was installed in just 2 days and looks great!”

Where the Pickets Come From Shows Up in Your Price

Two Austin bids for the same fence can sit hundreds of dollars apart because of what each contractor pays for wood and which grade the price was written against. National wood fence installs run $20 to $50 per linear foot (HomeGuide, 2026), and Texas generally prices at or below that, because pine and cedar supply is close by. Inside that range, the grade is the variable nobody volunteers.

Cedar is a word. #1, #2, and #3 pickets are the spec, and a bid that says only “cedar privacy fence” has left itself room to deliver the cheapest board. Ask which grade the number was written against and have it typed onto the quote.

Buying power is the other half. Master Halco named us its 2026 Largest Volume Customer for the Southwest Region and for the World, which means we buy wood pickets at a price a three-crew shop cannot get. That lands in the quote as the same fence for less money, and never as a thinner board sold as a thicker one.

Know These Five Terms Before You Read an Austin Bid

Fence quotes use five words that decide the price, and most homeowners meet them for the first time on the page. Learn them and the bids become comparable.

Term What it means Why it matters on your bid
Linear foot One foot of finished fence line, measured on the ground The unit every bid is built on; confirm who measured it
Picket grade The board quality, graded #1 through #3 Two “cedar” quotes can be two different boards
Ground contact Lumber treated for burial, used for posts The buried post is what fails first in Central Texas soil
Craftsmanship warranty Covers the install, not the wood itself Material claims go to the mill, not the crew
Haul-off Removing and disposing of the old fence On a replacement this is real cost; confirm it is included

Price a fence before you call

See what a fence costs before anyone quotes you.

Pick the material, the height and how many feet of fence, and the calculator shows the market range for a fence like yours in Texas. Then a salesperson measures the real one in your yard and the number comes back the same day.

The estimate is free and there is nothing to sign.

Ask These Four Questions Before You Sign Anything

Four questions turn a stack of similar-looking bids into a real comparison, and every honest contractor can answer all of them on the spot. Write the answers onto the quote before you sign it, because a verbal answer disappears the moment the crew changes.

The question to ask What a complete answer names
What exactly does your warranty cover? Craftsmanship or material, the term in years, and what voids it
How many crews do you run in the Austin metro? A number, plus who covers the job if that crew is out
Which picket grade is this price written against? #1, #2, or #3 in writing, plus post size and spacing
Who removes and hauls off the old fence? Named in the quote, with the day it happens

A contractor who answers all four in writing has told you more than any star rating can. One who will only answer the fourth has told you something too.

Where Austin Metro Fence Companies Stand on Their Public Numbers

Homeowners in Georgetown, Pflugerville, Cedar Park and Buda meet the same names on every search, and those names cluster tightly on rating while differing widely on how much record sits behind it. Here is how they compare on rating, review count, and what each one publishes about itself beyond the stars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Austin fence companies charge for an estimate?

Most give a free on-site estimate, and ours is free. The visit matters more than the price of it, because a quote written without someone standing in your yard is a guess at your footage.

How long does a fence replacement take once I accept the quote?

Our work starts within about 4 days of an accepted quote, and most residential jobs finish the same day they start. Larger runs, heavy tree cover, and gate work add days.

Does Austin require a permit to replace a fence?

Austin exempts fences up to 7 feet from a building permit as long as they are outside a flood hazard area, and requires one above 6 feet along a public right-of-way (City of Austin, 2025). Suburbs in the metro set their own rules, so ask who files the paperwork if a permit applies.

Can my HOA in Georgetown or Cedar Park stop me from putting up a fence?

No. Since September 1, 2025, Texas law bars a property owners’ association from prohibiting a perimeter fence, though it keeps limited say over type and material (Texas Property Code, 2025). Fencing installed before that date is grandfathered.

How long should a wood fence last around Austin?

About 20 years is the standard reference figure for a wood fence (InterNACHI), and Central Texas sun and clay soil push the posts, not the boards, toward the end of that window first. A fence past 20 years is usually being judged post by post.

Should I replace the whole fence or fix the leaning section?

Push a screwdriver into the base of several posts. If the posts are sound and one short run is down, patching that run is reasonable; when posts are soft or tilting along the line, you are buying a replacement whether you pay for it now or in two years.

Is financing available on a fence replacement?

Yes. We offer financing through Synchrony as a third party, at a 5% upcharge, for both residential and commercial work.

A Rating Grades the Last Job, and Yours Is the Next One

Every company on that list finished somebody’s fence well enough to earn the stars beside its name. That is genuinely useful information about the past. It is silent on the two things that decide your job: what the warranty covers when a post shifts in year two, and how many crews stand behind the date written on your quote.

So use the rating as a first cut, then make the shortlist answer the four questions in writing. The contractor who names the coverage, the crew count, the picket grade, and the haul-off day has already told you how your fence will go.

How Johnson Services Company Puts Over 100 Crews Behind Your Install Date

Those four questions are the ones we built the company to answer. Homeowners rate us 4.9 across 60 Google reviews on our company profile. On SoTellUs, we hold 4.9 across 170 reviews. In an April 2026 review on SoTellUs, a customer wrote: “The price was fair, the service was excellent, and everything was left clean once the job was done. Communication was great throughout the process, and they really took the time to go over the design with me before starting the work.”

We measure every job on site, name the picket grade on the quote, and load materials and crews before anyone leaves the yard. That is the unglamorous part that keeps install day free of surprises. It is also why the reviews that mean the most to us are the ones about replacements: in a June 2026 review on SoTellUs, a customer wrote, “Johnson Services provided a great estimate to replace our backyard fence beating out all other quotes. They were quick to replace and remove the old fence. The fence looks great and well built.”

Johnson Services Company answers all four questions in writing before a crew is scheduled, on any fence replacement in the Austin metro. Call (877) 956-4676 or request a visit, and a salesperson measures the line and gets you a number, usually the same day.
