Who buys this fence, and why
You share the line with a neighbor and both of you have to look at it. Shadowbox alternates pickets from side to side, so the fence finishes the same on both faces and neither of you gets the frame. Neighbors agree to it faster than they agree to a one-sided run. It also suits an owner who wants screening without a solid wall in a hot yard. It also suits a hot yard, because the fence screens the view without stopping the breeze along the line.
What your money buys
Pickets sit on alternating sides of the rails with a small gap between them. You get a screen rather than a wall. Looked at straight on the line reads solid, and from an angle you can see through it. Posts, rails and gate hardware match any other wood build, and the height options are the same. Both neighbors see pickets and both see a little of the frame, so neither of you ends up with the back of a fence.
What to settle before the crew arrives
Decide the gap before we build, because it sets how much you see and how much air moves. A tight gap screens more. A fence on a property line needs two decisions settled with your neighbor first: who pays, and where the posts go. Tell us which side the gate should swing toward while the plan is still on paper. Tell us the height you want at the low end as well as the high one when the ground falls away along the fence.
What it asks of you once it is up
Same care as any wood fence. Stain or seal every two to three years and wash it once a year. Air moves through the line, so it dries faster after rain than a solid fence does, and that works in your favor here. Walk the fence each spring and tighten the gate hardware. Both faces take the sun, so plan to stain both sides rather than only the one you look at.
