Which deck or gazebo you should actually buy
Pressure-treated pine deck
The workhorse and the lower number on the day. Treated southern pine takes foot traffic and weather, and it wants a sealer every couple of years to hold its color. Pick it for a big deck on a budget or a deck you plan to stain to match the fence.
Composite deck
Composite boards do not splinter and never need a sealer, and they cost more per square foot than pine. Pick it for a deck you will walk on barefoot and never want to sand. The boards carry the maker’s warranty, and our year covers the work.
A gazebo or a trellis
A gazebo puts a cedar roof over part of the deck, and a trellis screens a side of it or carries a vine along the fence. Both go up on the same posts as the deck. Pick them where the yard gets afternoon sun and you want somewhere to sit in July.
The three things that decide how long your deck or gazebo lasts
A fence is three things: what holds it up, what carries the load between the posts, and what you see from the street. You choose the last one. We build the first two the same way on every job, which is how twenty thousand fences last year produced not one callback.
Posts set below where Texas clay moves
The crew digs to depth for the height you picked, wet sets the posts in concrete and leaves them to cure. Texas clay moves through a dry summer and a wet spring, and a post set shallow is why a fence leans three years later. Ours do not.
A frame we never lighten to win a quote
Rails carry your fence between the posts. You never see them, and they decide whether the line stays straight. A cheap bid saves its money here first. We do not build a frame lighter than the job needs to make a number look better.
Hardware that never bleeds rust down your new fence
Fasteners, hinges and latches match the material, so nothing streaks. Your gate hardware carries the most weight and the most use, so its size follows the leaf rather than the price.
How your deck or gazebo will actually look
A deck is the floor of your back yard, and the details are what make it read as part of the house rather than a platform against it. Every one of these is a choice you make in the yard, and most of them change the quote a little.
Board direction
Boards run parallel to the house on most decks. A diagonal pattern or a border board around the edge reads custom and hides the cut ends.
The rail
A cedar rail with square balusters is the standard. A black metal baluster in a cedar frame keeps the view open toward a pool or a lawn.
Height and stairs
A deck at door height needs a rail. A low platform deck a foot off the ground does not, and it reads as a terrace. Stairs go where you actually walk to the lawn.
The skirt
Lattice or a solid cedar skirt closes the space under the deck, so nothing lives under it and the mower has an edge to follow.
Finish
Bare cedar and pine silver over two summers. A sealer holds the color and wants redoing. Composite skips the question.
A slope or a tree in the way is what a deck is for
A yard that falls away from the house is the one place a deck beats a patio, because the posts take up the grade and the floor stays level. A tree in the way gets a cutout in the deck rather than a stump. A deck more than thirty inches off the ground usually needs a permit, and we file it. Gravel goes under the deck, so water does not sit against the posts. None of that counts as a custom job on our quote.

The old panels, rails and pickets come down first. The old posts come out with the concrete still on them, and all of it leaves your property on the truck. Common questions about a new deck or gazebo
How long does the work take?
Most back yards finish the day the crew starts, because the crew counted and loaded every material before the truck left our yard. A long fence, heavy gates or a stubborn tear-out can take it into a second day, and your salesperson gives you the day count before you sign anything.
Do you haul the old fence away?
Yes, all of it. The old panels, the old posts and the concrete they sat in leave with the crew that day. Removal and haul-off are in the one price, never a line added to your bill afterward.
Do I need a permit for a new fence?
A residential fence in Texas rarely needs one. Your city or your HOA can still cap the height or set which side the finished face goes on. We check both before a post goes in the ground, which is one of the reasons the date holds.
What does the warranty cover?
