A composite fence is wood fiber and plastic pressed into a board, so it reads closer to wood than vinyl does and never takes a stain. Most people buy it for a back yard they look at every day and do not want to work on.

HomeGuide and Ergeon put a composite fence at $30 to $55 a foot installed, which is above cedar and about level with vinyl. That is a standard six-foot fence on flat, clear ground, before tear-out, gates and slope.

Which composite fence you should actually buy
Composite
Pick it where the fence is in view from the kitchen and you want a warm board color rather than white plastic. The boards lock into a channel, so there is not a screw head on the face and no gap for a neighbor to look through. It is the fence for an owner who wants the look of wood and has had enough of the upkeep of wood.
Vinyl instead
Pick vinyl where white or tan suits the house and the budget matters more than the grain. It cleans the same way and reads as a painted fence rather than a stained one.
Cedar instead
Pick cedar where you want real wood and the lower number on the day. It silvers evenly and should give you about twenty years on treated posts, and a stain every few years holds the color.
The three things that decide how long your composite fence lasts
A fence is three things: what holds it up, what carries the load between the posts, and what you see from the street. You choose the last one. We build the first two the same way on every job, which is how twenty thousand fences last year produced not one callback.
Posts set below where Texas clay moves
The crew digs to depth for the height you picked, wet sets the posts in concrete and leaves them to cure. Texas clay moves through a dry summer and a wet spring, and a post set shallow is why a fence leans three years later. Ours do not.
A frame we never lighten to win a quote
Rails carry your fence between the posts. You never see them, and they decide whether the line stays straight. A cheap bid saves its money here first. We do not build a frame lighter than the job needs to make a number look better.
Hardware that never bleeds rust down your new fence
Fasteners, hinges and latches match the material, so nothing streaks. Your gate hardware carries the most weight and the most use, so its size follows the leaf rather than the price.
How your composite fence will actually look
A composite fence is a warm, even plane with a fine grain in it, and the details are what keep it from reading as a plastic wall. Every one of these is a choice you make in the yard, and none of them changes the quote much.
The color
A few browns and a gray, with the color through the board. Composite settles to its final shade over the first summer and then stays there, so pick from a weathered sample rather than a fresh one.
The cap
A flat cap along the top finishes the fence and keeps rain off the board ends. Skip it and the top reads unfinished from the house.
Which side faces out
The boards lock into the rails from both sides, so the fence finishes the same on both faces and nobody gets the rails.
The gate
A composite gate carries a metal frame inside it, so it swings true for years. The hardware is black to match, so nothing bleeds rust.
Height
Six feet is the standard, and eight feet goes in where a city allows it. A solid composite fence is heavy, so the posts go deeper than on a wood fence.
A slope or a live oak on the line is a normal composite job
The panels step down a slope one post at a time, with the cap breaking at each post. A live oak on the line keeps its roots, and the crew sets the posts to either side of them. An irrigation head on the line moves a foot. The old wood fence goes out on the truck with its posts and its concrete. None of that counts as a custom job on our quote.

Common questions about a new composite fence
How long does the work take?
Most back yards finish the day the crew starts, because the crew counted and loaded every material before the truck left our yard. A long fence, heavy gates or a stubborn tear-out can take it into a second day, and your salesperson gives you the day count before you sign anything.
Do you haul the old fence away?
Yes, all of it. The old panels, the old posts and the concrete they sat in leave with the crew that day. Removal and haul-off are in the one price, never a line added to your bill afterward.
Do I need a permit for a new fence?
A residential fence in Texas rarely needs one. Your city or your HOA can still cap the height or set which side the finished face goes on. We check both before a post goes in the ground, which is one of the reasons the date holds.
What does the warranty cover?
One year of craftsmanship on every job, and across more than 20,000 jobs last year not one customer needed it. It covers our work: how the posts sit, how the frame hangs, how the gates swing and latch. Materials carry whatever their maker puts on them.
