How Long Does a Vinyl Fence Last in Texas?
A hundred years or more, by the home inspectors’ chart, against about twenty for wood. The sun, the wind and the posts decide whether yours gets there, and all three are in how it goes in.

- 24Years in Texas
- 20K+Fences installed yearly
- 4.9Google rating
- A+BBB rating
The home inspectors’ association rates a vinyl fence at a hundred years or more and a wood fence at about twenty, the widest gap between the two most common Texas fence materials on a single chart. The panel does not rot, termites cannot eat it, and the color runs all the way through, so a scratch shows the same white underneath.
The number that matters more is how long the fence stands straight, and that is the posts. A vinyl panel on a post set shallow in Texas clay leans in three summers like any other fence. Johnson sets every post below the ground that moves, which is why the vinyl fences we put up last year produced not one callback.
The panel is the easy part, and the sun is the hard part
Vinyl fence profiles follow an ASTM standard, F964, which tests the compound for impact resistance after weathering in hot-dry and hot-humid climates, the two Texas has. A two-year outdoor exposure study found the titanium dioxide in a good panel keeps more than ninety percent of its strength, and the same pigment still chalks and dulls the surface over time.
So a Texas vinyl fence ages from the outside in. The gloss goes first, on the west face that takes the afternoon sun. The strength stays. A hose twice a year takes the chalk and the mildew off, and that is the whole maintenance list.
Three things take a vinyl fence down early, and none of them is the vinyl
A post set shallow. Gulf Coast gumbo clay swells through a wet spring and shrinks through a dry August, and Blackland clay north of Dallas heaves harder than that. A post that stops above the ground that moves leans, and a leaning post pulls the panel out of its rails.
A solid panel on an open lot. The Gulf Coast designs for a wind on the order of a hundred and thirty miles an hour, and a full privacy panel catches all of it. On an exposed lot the posts go deeper and the fence gets a heavier rail, or the panel gets a gap so the wind passes through.
An impact. A mower, a trailer or a limb cracks a panel that a hundred summers would not. That is the one repair a vinyl fence ever asks for, and it is one panel, not the run.
Posts set below the ground that moves, in concrete, to the depth the height asks for.
A heavier rail and deeper posts on an exposed lot, priced as wind rather than as an upsell.
Semi privacy where the wind is the problem, so the fence screens the yard and lets the gust through.
Color all the way through the panel, so a scratch never shows.

Price a fence before you call

Pick the material, the height and how many feet of fence, and the calculator shows the market range for a fence like yours in Texas. Then a salesperson measures the real one in your yard and the number comes back the same day.

Run the numbers over twenty years, not over the quote
Pine costs less on the day and cedar looks better bare, and both want a stain every few years and a new post at some point. Houston sits at 77.2 on the federal wood-decay index, deep in the high band, and a pine post at the bottom of a wet yard shows it. Vinyl costs more on the day and then needs a hose twice a year and nothing else.
Most people come to vinyl after a wood fence went grey and then went over. Nobody buys more fence than Johnson, so the vinyl fence goes up on the date we gave you, and the staining weekends stop for good.
What a vinyl fence costs in Texas, and why ours is the number to hold
HomeGuide and Ergeon put a vinyl privacy fence at $30 to $60 a foot installed, and Texas runs at or below the national figure. Full privacy costs more than semi privacy because it is more panel, tan and gray run a little above white, and a lattice top adds to it.
A salesperson measures the fence line in your yard, so the number is yours and not a guess at it, and it covers the tear-out and the haul-off. A hundred crews put it up on the date we gave you, most of them in a day.

Twenty thousand fences last year, and not one callback
Fence didn’t budge an inch when severe storms came through the next day!
Celeste T.Google review, Houston North office, August 2025 Johnson replaced a metal fence along my back yard. They were responsive to my needs, came in a fair price and delivered as promised. The quality of the materials is excellent and the installation was seamless. i would highly recommend them.
David H.Google review, Houston North office, August 2025 I have had Johnson services first – put in a perimeter fence, then- add a front gate, then add a side gate, then recently a back gate- I have been very pleased with all of their work, their workers, their sales person, and office staff. Thank you very much!!! This is over a 3 year period- still satisfied.

Common questions about how long does a vinyl fence last
How long does a vinyl fence last compared with wood?
The home inspectors’ association rates a vinyl fence at a hundred years or more and a wood fence at about twenty. In Texas the gap is wider on the coast, where the decay index is high and a pine post rots from the ground up.
Does vinyl fencing crack in the Texas heat?
Heat alone does not crack it. The profiles follow ASTM F964, which tests impact strength after weathering in hot-humid and hot-dry climates. Cold makes vinyl brittle, and a hard impact on a cold morning is the one thing that cracks a panel.
Does a vinyl fence turn yellow?
A good panel holds its color, and the sun dulls the surface over the years rather than yellowing it. The titanium dioxide that protects the compound chalks a little on the west face, and a hose takes the chalk off.
Can a vinyl fence handle Gulf Coast wind?
A solid panel catches the whole wind, and the coast designs for gusts on the order of a hundred and thirty miles an hour. On an open lot we set the posts deeper and run a heavier rail, or build semi privacy so the wind passes through.
What does the warranty cover on a vinyl fence?
Every job carries a one-year craftsmanship warranty on our work: how the posts sit, how the panels hang, how the gates swing and latch. The panels carry the maker’s warranty, and across more than 20,000 jobs last year not one customer needed ours.
