The Cheapest Fence That Is Not a Mistake in Texas

The cheapest fence that holds up in Texas is a sound pine spec at a fair price, not the lowest per-foot bid.

Most Texas homeowners pricing a fence on a budget have already seen the failure. It was a fence leaning in two years, a quote that never named the picket grade, or a crew that took a deposit and went quiet. The usual advice is to find the lowest per-foot number and sign.

The lowest per-foot number is where the second bill starts. The saving that lasts comes from the right grade and post depth bought at a fair price.

What is the cheapest fence in Texas that is still worth buying?

Wood costs $18 to $45 a foot (HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor, 2025 to 2026) and chain link $12 to $28 (HomeGuide, Angi), so for privacy the lowest-priced fence worth buying is pine built to a sound spec. If privacy is not the need, chain link costs least per foot, and either price only counts when the grade and the posts are right.

A low bid that thins out the spec does not save money. It moves the cost to year three. We can work within a budget, but we cannot turn a bad specification into a good fence.

Wood costs $18 to $45 a foot (HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor), chain link $12 to $28 (HomeGuide, Angi), vinyl privacy $30 to $60 (HomeGuide, Ergeon) and ornamental steel or iron $45 to $90 (HomeGuide, Angi). Each range is installed, for a six-foot residential fence on flat ground, before tear-out, gates and slope.

What the ranges leave out is where quotes climb. An 8-foot fence adds material and often engineering. Old-fence removal, gates, extra corner and gate posts, heavy clay that slows post holes, and sloped or hard-to-reach yards all push a quote above the range.

Why do cheap fences fail in Texas heat and clay soil?

Texas expansive clay swells and shrinks with the weather, and that movement pulls on shallow or loosely set posts first. Heat and UV wear down thin or untreated boards.

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service classes Houston Black, the Texas State Soil, as about 60 to 80% clay with very high shrink-swell potential (NRCS, 2023). On decay, the USDA Forest Products Laboratory scores Houston at 77.2, deep in the high-risk band, against Dallas at 44.3 (Carll, 2009). A low price that skips the posts is where cheap becomes a mistake.

A fence company that stops answering is another way a cheap bid goes wrong. In a 1-star Google review on February 16, 2026, a fence company reviewer wrote: “Never heard from him ever again despite numerous texts and calls to the business”. Before you pay a deposit, get the grade and the post depth in writing.

What picket grade and post depth should a cheap Texas wood fence have?

A cheap wood fence holds up when the picket grade is named on the quote and the posts are set deep enough for Texas ground. Wood is graded from #1 picket through #3 picket and priced accordingly, so a quote that leaves the grade off cannot be compared with one that names it.

The 2021 International Building Code sizes fence posts as cantilevered poles. Required depth grows with wind force and shrinks with stronger soil (International Building Code, 2021). A heavy solid gate on a tall post in soft clay needs a deep, wide concrete footing, so ask for the depth and the concrete in writing.

We build with pressure-treated framing and cedar pickets. Our salesperson measures the linear footage on site and confirms fence type and picket grade.

Chain link costs less per foot and asks little upkeep, so it fits a yard that needs containment but not privacy. A wood privacy fence costs more and is the one to buy when privacy matters.

Chain link sits at $12 to $28 a foot (HomeGuide, Angi) and wood at $18 to $45 (HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor). Within chain link, coating weight sets the life. ASTM A392 requires at least 1.2 oz/ft² of zinc for Class 1 and 2.0 oz/ft² for Class 2, and the heavier class outlasts standard galvanized fabric (ASTM A392, 2017). Ask which class is on the quote.

How do Texas fence companies buy wood pickets for less?

Nobody buys more fence pickets than we do, and that buying power gets us a wood-picket price a small shop does not get. The savings go to you on the same spec.

You pay less for the same fence rather than the same price for a thinner one. Nobody buys more fence pickets than we do, so nobody in Texas sells you a wood fence for less. Over 100 crews keep the date from slipping.

What should a Texas fence quote include before you sign?

A Texas fence quote should come from a measured fence line, name the picket grade and be the price you pay. We price every project by custom quote after a free on-site estimate, because cost depends on fence type, materials, length, gates and site conditions.

  • Measured footage: our salesperson meets you on site and measures the linear footage. A figure over the phone from your address is only a rough estimate.
  • Picket grade: we quote #1 to #3 by name.
  • One price: the quote is the price you pay. The estimate is free, with nothing to sign, and the quote comes the same day.

How Johnson Fence holds a wood fence price and start date with over 100 crews

The lowest price that lasts comes from the right grade and posts bought once, and that is the fence we sell. We buy pickets for less and pass it on, the quote names your picket grade, and a one-year craftsmanship warranty covers the work. Our record shows zero craftsmanship warranty callbacks across 20,000-plus jobs last year.

Eight of our 87 most recent four- and five-star reviews describe the crew showing up on time. In an August 2025 Google review, Celeste T. wrote: “Excellent experience beginning to end! Wouldn’t hesitate to use them again or recommend to others! Options were presented to work within our budget. Supervisor confirmed timeline, crew arrived promptly, confirmed work scope, worked efficiently and left the property clean. Fence didn’t budge an inch when severe storms came through the next day!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, per foot. Chain link runs $12 to $28 a foot (HomeGuide, Angi) against $18 to $45 for wood (HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor). It gives containment, not privacy.

How long does a pressure-treated pine fence last in Texas?

A wood fence put in properly should give you about twenty years. Rotted posts and thin pickets are what cut that short.

Is cedar worth the extra cost over pine in Texas?

Cedar costs more, at $35 to $80 a foot against $20 to $45 for pressure-treated pine (HomeGuide, 2025 to 2026). We build with pressure-treated framing and cedar pickets, and picket grade is named on the quote either way.

Do I need a permit to build a fence in Texas?

Texas cities set their own fence rules, so the answer changes by address. We determine whether your project needs a permit and file it where it does.

Does it cost anything to get a fence estimate from Johnson Fence?

No. The estimate is free and there is nothing to sign.

How do I compare two fence quotes for the same job?

Check that both state the picket grade, the post depth and the concrete, and that the footage was measured on site. A quote missing any of those prices a different fence than the one beside it.
